Revitalization of the Bozeman Cannery
Posted on August 1, 2023 @ 5:42PM

As a designer my days are filled with thoughtful, interesting, and talented people.  I am often left speechless, wondering "Who in the heck thought up this one!"

Did you know that in 1912, the Gallatin Valley was known as the ‘Pea Capital of the Nation,” producing 75% of the nation’s crop? The Bozeman Canning Company was opened in the summer of 1917, canning peas, beans, and meat. Between 3,000 and 3,500 acres were contracted by three to four growers to feed the cannery. On Average, 13,000 cases of peas per day were produced.  They were marketed as “Peas That Please” and distributed across the nation with brand names such as “Gallatin Valley” and “Bridger Canyon.”

For many years the buildings sat empty - then one day one of those aforementioned brilliant people stepped in, and today the Cannery is a unique and fun place to spend an afternoon.  The bustling site boasts a Kombucha brewery, a hair salon, Patagonia wholesale offices, a yummy sushi bar, a coffee shop and more.  Casting for Recovery, a group of great people who enhance the quality of life for women with breast cancer through fly fishing, call the cannery home.   Studio Como in particular caught my eye.  With brands like B& B Italia, Minotti, De La Espada, Moroso, Cassina and E15 showcased here.  The Cannery is one of my favorite Bozeman stops.
