Fernan Ranger Station

← Back To Projects

We were hired jointly by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of the Interior to redesign the entire campus of the Fernan Ranger Station in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho so that a freeway off-ramp could be constructed through the location of the existing main office building.   Due to the schedule of the freeway construction, the schedule for the project was extremely tight, and totally non-negotiable.

Rob Spafford, the project engineer in charge of the project for the USDA, wrote: "We selected you for two reasons: Your high degree of sensitivity to the unique characteristics of our site, and your very thorough design process that would explore our complex needs and provide a design meaningfully responsive to them. The design you provided for the Fernan project exceeded our expectations in both of these regards.  The Fernan Ranger Station is an important facility for us, and your design incorporates a number of features that we frankly did not think could all be included. We are hearing feedback from the USDA internally that this project is the best office building the Forest Service has anywhere in the nation.  Your work was exceptional for more than design excellence. Your attention to detail has received many compliments for its thoroughness. The specifications and drawings made the construction contract much easier to administer, and the project was completed without a single contractor requested change order."
